As a newly engaged couple you may be asking yourselves “Just how important are engagement photos?” Maybe you’re a little camera shy (I am!) or feel like engagement photos just aren’t necessary (I totally get it!) However, as a photographer who specializes in Colorado engagement photos and absolutely LOVES them, my answer is (of course) “Don’t Skip the Engagement Session!” In fact, I think engagement photo sessions are so important that I include them free of charge with all of my wedding packages!
While my engagement sessions are always a ton of fun, they also give us an excellent opportunity to create some amazing and adventurous images without the same limitations that a wedding day has. You can choose any location, wear whatever you want, and do it in the best lighting! Beyond the fun part of creating gorgeous photos for your invitations, save the dates, Instagram shares and those living room frames, here are my top reasons why I think engagement photos are a must:
The engagement session is a great time to build on your relationship with your photographer. While getting to know your photographer at an engagement shoot will give you a sense of their personality, humor, and working methods, an engagement photo shoot is also a perfect opportunity for them to get to know you and your relationship.
The more I know about you, your fiancé, likes and dislikes, and even your family the easier it will be for me to document those real and candid moments. This way when you see me on your wedding day, I’m more of a friend with a camera rather than a vendor that you’re meeting for the first time.
I find that an engagement session always helps my couples feel more at ease on the big day. Most people have never been professionally photographed, so it’s only natural to feel a little awkward in front of the camera. If this sounds like you (or your partner), don’t worry! An engagement shoot is will help you get comfortable in front of the camera and experience being photographed together as a couple. You’ll also get to see the type of direction your photographer gives you and if it works well with your personalities.
I was recently fortunate enough to work with this couple (pictured) who came to me after they were disappointed with the engagement photos they received from another photographer. I felt terrible for them!
Luckily I had the chance to give them a do over, and it turns out all they needed was the right kind of direction! They were lucky that they had the chance to realize that their original photographer wasn’t a perfect fit for them, and they were able to make a change before the wedding day.
I know when some couples think about getting their photos taken, it almost sounds like a chore! Something you should do because everyone’s doing it, or you just need a few photos for your save the dates… But I’m here to change your mindset! Engagement photos are not only a great way to connect with your partner, they can be a fun adventure that incorporates locations or activities that mean something special to you as a couple! Do you love cooking together? Going hiking? Have a special furry family member? Let’s show off those details in your shoot!
Photography is a big investment, but one that also lasts forever. Engagement sessions show the quality of work you should expect to receive, so by the time the wedding rolls around, you and your fiancé will be calm, cool, collected and totally camera ready!
